Hi,
Since the author site and public site will be hosted in two differenct hosting
environment, the clustering approach is finally dropped. But I managed to setup
author instance as a subscriber of the public instance (for forum workspace
only). It looks fine based on some very basic testing. I posted my
configuration steps below and hope to hear some thoughts from your guys
regarding any concern about this approach (security or stability).

1. Generate security keys for Public instance:
1.1 In 'Configuration' app, change 'Server -> admin' to "true". This will
activate the key generation function on 'Public' instance.
1.2 Launch 'Activation Tools' app through 'Tools->Activation Tools'. Click
'Generate New Key' button to create a new Private/Public key pair for the
public instance.
1.3 Go back to 'Configuration' app, change 'Server-> admin' back to "false".
2. Config Author instance as a subscriber on Public instance:
2.1 In 'Configuration' app, config Author site as a subscriber of public
site on 'Server->activation->subscribers' node.
2.2 Under 'Server->activition->subscribers->[Author Subscriber
Node]->subscriptions', config URIs of the data/content to synch back to author
instance.
3. Setup the public keys for Author and Public instance:
3.1 Copy Author instance generated public key to Public instance:
3.1.1 Open '[Magnolia Author Instance Root
Folder]/WEB-INF/config/default/magnolia-activation-keypair.properties'. Copy
the public key value.
3.1.2 On Public instance, open 'Configuration' app. Paste the public key
value to 'Server->publicKey'.
3.2 Copy Public instance generated public key to Author instance:
3.2.1 Open '[Magnolia Public Instance Root
Folder]/WEB-INF/config/default/magnolia-activation-keypair.properties'. Copy
the public key value.
3.2.2 On Author instance, open 'Configuration' app. Paste the public key
value to 'Server->publicKey'.
