Hi Dan, If you running older version of 4.5 you need to upgrade to intermediate version then upgrade to 5.3. I had similar issue with Magnolia forms module where I first upgraded to from 4.5.6 to 4.5.8 and then I upgraded from 4.5.8 to 5.3. I could not upgrade from 4.5.6 to 5.3 because of dependancy issues.
