Yes, using MySQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle will perform better than Derby. 
Databases like those also offer features like clustering, monitoring, hot 
backups, etc.

Maybe Magnolia could add a little bit more information about this in their 
documentation. Currently all I could find about this a single bullet point at 
the bottom of
