Can you verify that it is not a caching problem by appending an
argument to your url when the page turns up blank?
E.g. instead of localhost:8081/magnoliaAuthor/home.html use
localhost:8081/magnoliaAuthor/home.html?bla=x
If that works, turn off caching and report back.
Or are you running in root context?
