I had a similar problem. Someone suggested not using JDK 1.5 (kind of
tough with tc55 track) for the initial install. I reverted to 1.4 and
used tc5028, and it worked. Later I moved the expanded wars to tc55 and
they seem happy.
This was something I wanted to suggest (but I couldn't remember for sure). It may be a problem about
xml factory/parsers (don't take this for sure, cause I cannot confirm it for sure yet).

Having too little memory devoted to java can cause failure to this

It takes about 10 good minutes to bootstrap magnolia the very first
time you start the server.
Any start thereafter is then really quick.
