eurk! I thought that the CMS would handle that. I have experience
escaping SQL in JSP that grab data via JDBC. That I understand -
different encoding in the database data and in Tomcat. But I don't
understand this cropping up in a tutorial - it isn't encouraging me to
go further.

In fact the CMS has nothing to do with it, as you are writting just a JSP file that is processed
inside the servlet container.
