Thanks for the tip on this one - I will try the steps you outlined at
my next opportunity (am traveling this week, so I've been
unresponsive on the list, sorry).
BUT, the Magnolia home page search does seem to be broken - I can see
the text 'languages' right on the first page, but a search will not
find it. In fact, I have not manage to search for *anything* that
brings back a single result. This was a bit embarrassing, as I was
actually advocating Magnolia to a friend, who then checked out the
site and was completely unimpressed when he started searching for info.

1) you have no indexing configured
2) you have an index setup, but the index files are corrupt
1) Check that there is an index set, by opening file "repositories/
website/workspaces/default/workspace.xml". You should find the
"SearchIndex" tag with the index configuration and above the
"FileSystem" tag with the filesystem configuration. If you have
both set, try 2).

- Stop Web server
- Delete folder "index" in "repositories/website/workspaces/default"
- Restart the Web server
