Why should you?
The url-ending is arbitrary. You can map the ending to subtemplates, I
think I have mentioned this before. Map .html to your main template,
.pdf and .xml to two other templates that output xml and pdf
respectively. Check the wiki:

We're talking about Magnolia virtual URI's. Does Magnolia output
anything but HTML? Could I conceivably output a 'contact_us.do'?
Magnolia can output anything you want respectively make it do. JSP as a
templating language is output agnostic.
In that case, I should split the page_uri by the '.' and take the first
half.
Please check out StringUtils from Apache Commons. It has everything you
need to make working with Strings a pleasure in Java.
