David I followed your instructions below but found for some reason the 
generated URLs had an additional / attached to them and hence had all sorts of 
problems.

I have since gone by Will's option 1 suggestion as per his earlier email 
response - changed the magnoliaPublic instance to something more appropriate to 
my site. After a few attempts that seems to have activated fine with the right 
URLs. 
However on my public instance I now see the "Edit/Move/Delete" menu bars as 
well as the Preview/AdminCentral and Properties" as you normally would on the 
author instance.

I suspect the public instance still thinks that it is the author instance and 
hence displays these menubars. Any clues what additional configuration changes 
I might have to make to get rid of these menubars.
