You need to download & install Subversion for your exact version of OS
in order check out source code don't you? 

I tried to download it for Suse 9.0 & it said it would take 18 hours.
Never did finish.

I think for a lot of users is simpler to download a release and its
sourcecode than to go and checkout some tagged sourcecode. Check also
some of the other oss projects.
