I feel so very, very, very stupid... :-(

Sameer, your words "shared repository object" hit me in particular and
made me re-test my supposed singleton Repository provider and I had to
discover that the instance that I thought Magnolia and my custom code
were sharing were in fact two instances...

...I'd have guessed that Jackrabbit and especially the
BerkeleyDBPersistenceManager would throw an exception if two instances
hit the filesystem in parallel but that wasn't the case.

Fixing the code to really work with the same Repository instance made
all problems go away.
