I'm guessing you are using the <cmsu:simpleSearch> tag.  In that case,
the only thing that will contrain the search is the startLevel
attribute.  Startlevel moves up the tree to the nearest ancestor at the
given level and runs the search from there.  The down side is the page
displaying the result set has to be below the level specified in
startLevel and on the same subtree as the one you want to search.
