Well, I got it switched and it's working now.

How strange that Derby would cause this whole thing to fail.

We are running one 2.1.3 as well as a 2.1.5 Magnolia (two instances of
each) on a linux debian server. We've also had memory issues, but not
the same kind of yours (more like this one:
http://forum.springframework.org/showthread.php?t=21383), but I don't
think that's related.

Just wanted to show that both versions can be stopped and started
together on one system.

I guess your issue is perhaps a conflict between derbyDB and the
virtual server. 2.1.3 uses BerkeleyDB.

You could try changing your 2.1.5's persistencemanager to
BerkeleyDBPersistenceManager. The loss of performance isn't too big, I
think.
