I had some problems with that quickstart guide just yesterday. I found that the "Developer Documentation" has a section on templating that is almost identical to the Templater's Quickstart - but it works in vers 3.0 and also uses xml formatted jsp pages (which matches the samples included in the 3.0 version - unlike the old 2.0 guide which uses the <%% style tags)
