After i had this problem with tomcat 5.5.23 using jdk1.6.0 i set the jdk to jdk1.5.0_11 clean all tomcat related dirs like /logs and /work and delete the /webapps/magnoliaXXX dirs and delete the previous dB tables in mysql to have a fresh deploy process.
