I have not done that myself yet, but I noticed that in page properties (when you are logged in as one of the authors on the author instance, you can modify view/edit page properties), there is a tab with the name "meta". I think you should be able to use that to add meta information to your pages.
Otherwise, modifying hte page templates is an option too. With that the advantage is that you don't have to modify each page, but that requires change in the template jsps and deploying those jsps to both author and public instances.
