I don't see any reason why magnolia wouldn't run on a 64 bit system --
it's pure java and as long as you have a 64 bit JVM it should work.
Regarding how much memory the JVM could consume -- it's beyond the scope
of this list. It has been discussed on the tomcat-user list if you'd
like to browse that discussion:

What I linked to above was the beginning of the discussion. See the

Okay, I found this
http://blogs.sun.com/moazam/entry/why_can_t_i_allocate about the issue.
Our OS is 32-bit Windows Server 2003 so is limited in the amount of
contiguous memory we can allocate.
Would magnolia running on a 64-bit system be able to utilize the extra
address space correctly - are there considerations beyond just
installing a 64-bit jvm?

Subject: Re: [magnolia-user] tomcat heap allocation
It means your system doesn't have 1.6GB of contiguous memory for
tomcat. It may have the physical memory, but because of various dlls,
libraries, etc., ... loaded in different places in memory the OS can
allocate 1.6GB in one big chunk.

This problem was when trying to start via the bat file - no errors

When installing as a service - even with 1640m - the error thrown is:

Lowering the allocated memory to the jvm, for example to --JvmMx 1024
allows the service to run properly.
Any thoughts?

Are you using the bat to start the tomcat or you are starting it as a
service?
Are there any errors in the log?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
When trying to run magnolia 3.01EE on tomcat 5.5 on Windows Server
2003,
if I allocate more than -Xmx1640m in Catalina.bat, tomcat will not
even
attempt to start up, stating that the CATALINA_HOME environmental
variable is not set up. I don't think this is the problem though, as
all
memory allocation of 1640m and below result in correct startup, and
1641m and above results in no startup.
Any ideas? Are there some operating system settings that will allow me
to throw a lot more memory at tomcat?
Cheers,
Chris
