it's not the smile, it's rather that something's lost in translation :)

at first "yes, sir" always sounds a bit grumpy for us Italians, but
that's because we very seldomly use that expression and when we do it
is as if we wanted to underline we are compelled to answer yes (the
reason is that it is the typical answer a soldier would give to any
order a superior gives him)
