i tried to install debian sarge rc2 into an uml system. the host is running a kernel 2.6.8-10 with applied skas patch from http://www.user-mode-linux.org/~blaisorblade/patches/skas3-2.6/host-skas3-2.6.7-v7.patch (should be ok for 2.6.8 too, debian provied only patches till 2.6.7). the uml kernel is from http://packages.debianbase.de/sarge/i386/uml-exp/user-mode-linux_2.6.8-1um-1.tha9.deb. for the installer i used initrd 2.6 from a debian sarge rc2 cd set.

the install process stops when its time to install the kernel-image-2.6.8-5. the output of /var/log/message tell that setting up kernel-image-2.6.8-5 has failed: /usr/sbin/mkinitrd: device /dev/ubd/disc4/disc (wich is a logical volume on host) is not a block device. there is only one exit in mkinitrd (function getroot) with the message "device ... is not a block device". my shell script experience doesnt allow me to find out why /dev/ubd/disc4/disc is not a block device. but isn't ubd ("user block device") a kind of a block device???

combinations of ubd=3, fake_ide and fakehd wont either work. even with this options i can't see hd entries in /dev only /dev/ubd/... and sometimes dev/discs/... can anybody tell me how to fake so i get real block device for debian installer or what else can i do?
