Just a new fact (and solution) I discovered related to the zombie process.
As pointed by Paolo, It seems the problem is related in some way to xterms.

I have checked that adding the following to the command line:

xterm=gnome-terminal,-t,-x

which changes xterms to gnome-terminals, the zombie process dissapears.

So, the results experimented so far using 2.6.9-bb4 guest on 2.6.9-skas3-v7
depending on the command line parameters are the following:

con=null con0=pts   ---> OK
con=null con0=xterm ---> NOTOK (zombie process left after halting)
con=null con0=xterm xterm=gnome-terminal,-t,-x    --> OK

Best regards,
David
