Hello,

I tried all the suggestions from the list without success. Thanks to all. A
memtest on my hostmachine didn't find any memory errors. I assigned more
memory to the UML without success. There is still the problem with the sshd
and mysqld segfaulting.

I found this in the gentoo wiki:

"Configuring the guest kernel

Gave up on this, see "Downloading Guest Kernel" above. If someone figures out
a stable setup for the guest kernel running on a 2.6.10 host with the skas3
patch, let me know, and update this section."

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_User_Mode_Linux#Downloading_the_guest_kernel

which seems to meet my scenario. I also have skas3 on the host and I tried
with 2.6.8, 2.6.10, 2.6.11.6 and can't find a 2.6.x guest kernel (tried 2.6.9,
2.6.10, 2.6.11.6, please also see quote below) running stable on this host
kernel. Are there any more suggestions on that problem? Otherwise I'll try
some 2.4.x Kernel to find one running stable with my debian-sarge root_fs.
Has anybody a combination of 2.6.x host and 2.6.x gueste kernel that works
using skas (and maybe debian sarge rootfs)? Can you maybe provide infos on
your versions and patches?

regards

     Daniel

Subject: UML guest kernel 2.6.x problems

Hi,

I'm using UML on debian sarge. At the moment I'm using a hand build
"Linux 2.6.8skas-v6 #1 SMP" on the host system (with patches from
http://www.user-mode-linux.org/~blaisorblade/patches) and the guest kernel
from debian unstable "2.4.26-3um". My rootfs is debian sarge made with
rootstrap. My hostsystem is a Dual PIII/800, 1.5GB RAM, 70GB ICP RAID5.

Now I tried to build up a 2.6 kernel for the guest systems. I tried 2.6.9,
2.6.10 and 2.6.11.6 with an without patches from the above URL. The kernel
compiles fine an also boots up, but for example the sshd won't run with
"UsePAM yes". Every login-attempt triggers the sshd to segfault. I wouldn't be
that bad to change sshd_config not to use PAM but also my mysqld from
debian-sarge won't come up with the 2.6 guest kernel. I also segfaults an
couldn't even do a traceback in case of invalid pointers. I tried to do some
debugging an it seems the some action called "umoven" short after a call to
"mprotect" triggers the sshd to segfault. Does anybody have any hints on that?
Is this a known problem or is this only related to my system? I googled for a
while but didn't find any helpful links.

Thank you & regards

               Daniel
