SHould be possible using COW files. Create your bootable CD, then create a COW file that exists on the CD. Then, mount a partion as tmpfs and place your RW file there. You will have to create the RW file at every boot obviously.

I wonder if you could just mount /dev/rd/0 as ubd0. That would be pretty neat.
