Installing the new ones is not too painful... however yes, if you're trying to

No, the same patch applies (IIRC) even on that kernel. However, you might get 
a better experience with 2.4.28-bs2 patch from my homepage. Just don't try 
compiling it with GCC 4.0 (I presume it's not your case), since 2.4 doesn't 
support it.
