For HIGHMEM not enabled, you should disable TT mode entirely - that will allow 
using big amounts of memory without Highmem. You can run SKAS0 mode even on 
unpatched hosts.

Also, I've heard of people with problems on DevFS with UML, maybe disabling it 
may help (you must do the needed changes to the VM setup).
