Oh, sorry. I eventually did the whole patch/build procedure directly on the target (skas) machine (FC5 with gcc 4.1.0) and both the host and the uml guest worked ok. This machine is different then my dev machine (ubuntu 6.0.6 with gcc 4.0.3) where the rebooting kernel was compiled.
