if SKAS is enabled in the guest? Or in the host?

Likely not.
However, reading subsequent messages from you, I'd advice to use 2.6.17 since 
you're using recent RH distros which require NPTL support. That support was 
included in 2.6.16-bs2 too (and partially in 2.6.15-bb6), which could explain 
why some 2.6.16 kernel you tried work.
