Yeah, when saying /dev/console I was thinking exactly about that. What I meant (but I didn't fully express, my fault) is that you can redirect it manually with bash, or the kernel can open+dup2 /dev/console to the fd 1. -- Inform me of my mistakes, so I can keep imitating Homer Simpson's "Doh!".
