I can reproduce the BUG with the kernel image and filesystem that you
used, but not with current 2.6.21-rc4, so I would say that it was a
bug in 2.6.19 that has since been fixed.

With the configuration of that kernel in 2.6.21-rc3, I can reproduce
the signal 4 panic, so that's something that I can chase now.
