Hmm.... you'd better use a recent 2.4 kernel. The latest one ever tried was 
2.4.33 + patches on my home page (which will probably apply on following 
releases).

Nothing is clear, it arrives at initializing the stdio console driver and no 
more. However when I downloaded first UML we had more modern ones, so 
_upgrade_.

Better yet, there's an extremely beautiful word for this situation: your 
configuration is _unsupported_ (not for RH8, but for the kernel).
