Actually, that wasn't it. I had that problem a long time ago when I was setting up UML for the first time. However, I quickly figured that out. Trust me, on some of the kernels below 2.6.21, it really is related to the networking code somehow. I have no idea how.
However, since Jeff assures me it is fixed, I am happy.
