Hi Jeff! Now I perfectly understand what your purpouses are and I agree with you as regard tool set personalization. Actually there are many hosting companies that are not allowing the root access to their servers. A tipical situation in which you need a root access to a web server is (e. g.) for CMS-based (Mambo or Joomla!) websites. So we have several companies which supplies for that support. In this case, you only have to backup both your mysql database and the website directory. If you need some example feel free to ask me for many links to that companies.
I know what you mean, but hosting is very expensive, expecially for large memory size (like 1GB), since you need to upload a whole root filesystem. Maybe the best solution is to host your root filesystem in your own server (e.g. at your office or at home) and to buy a domain. Once you've got the domain, you can redirect all requests to the server (which has "unlimited" disk space). Bye!
