The bug is still open.
There are about 6 proposed patches.
Basically there are some deadlock conditions possible associated with loading
and unloading modules, module refcounts and internal kernel locking structures.
I don't pretent to undrestand the kernel structures - haven't delved that deep.
The system ends up stuck in uninteruptible sleep and blocked in a busy loop.
It seems feasible that this problem affects 2.6 kernels in general.
