I would find a method of copying files that doesn't corrupt them.
That's all that's needed.
If you're referring to UML not being willing to boot a backing file
once it's been copied, you have two choices -
make sure the creation date is preserved during the copy
boot using ubda=cow,backing-file once and that will update the
COW file's information about the backing file
