What if you say, "root=/dev/ubda"? While you can sometimes get away without initramfs now, it's getting harder and harder. I have broken off most of the Freeswan/Openswan UML build environment off as a separate project at: https://github.com/mcr/uml-network-testing-infrastructure This likely doesn't work with kernels newer than 2.6.26, but I do have fixes in other trees for that, I just haven't moved things over.
