Thanks. I'd agree.  I just tracked it down to that, only with the addition that 
"localhost" would be replaced with the hostname of whichever server is being 
started.  I'm about to run those commands with "set -x" enabled in the 
start-server.sh file to see if I get any more info.  If that fails, I'll look 
at manually running the commands that are in start-server.sh on each host and 
look for errors local to the host.

start-server.sh localhost tserver
start-server.sh localhost master
start-server.sh localhost gc
start-server.sh localhost monitor
start-server.sh localhost tracer
