1.9.x is effectively the continuation of the 1.8.x bug fix releases. I've also upgraded several clusters from 1.8 to 1.9. There were some issues identified and fixed in the interim 1.9.x versions that you may experience, so I would recommend upgrading directly to the latest 1.9.3.
