I was just about to ask …. I fired up 1.6.1 to see how delete host works … the
first thing I ran into was the error message telling me that I couldn’t delete
the host because it had master components running on it, so I would have to
‘move’ those off to another host first… I couldn’t see how to do that in
ambari-web and from your comments below I now know why :)
So looking at the REST api, I couldn’t find any information about deleting
components either….
Q: could you give an example of the REST calls needed to ‘move’ a master
component from one host to another?
Q: what is maintenance mode and when would I need to use it? Is it related to
this kind of workflow?
Q: in the code for deleteHosts() there is a check for the existence of roles on
a host and if any exist an exception is thrown. Does merely stopping a
component remove its role from that host? I’m a little confused as to how that
works…

thanks
Aaron

Hi João,

Unfortunately this is not available via the UI yet.
You need to move the Storm master components (delete from the original host and
create on another host) via the REST API.
Once you do that, you can delete the host from the UI (or REST API).

In Ambari 1.5.* - 1.6.1, it is also necessary to stop the agent from
heartbeating while attempting to delete it either via a curl call or the

So am I correct in assuming that in order to delete a host, all components
on that host must first be uninstalled? i.e. it¹s not enough to just stop
them ...
