Just to say thanks so much for your comments (and also to Wes for some
comments he offered which i've tried to address) - they have all very much
helped my understanding  (and prompted me to do some further reading).
You're absolutely right about the C++ bindings, until you mentioned it I
hadn't really understood this part.

I have done a bit more work to clarify things further and after
bit more editing and a bit more reading I'll publish this soon (all
remaining errors are of course my own).

Thanks also to everyone working on the project - we're certainly starting
to see significant benefits in the organisation I work for (UK government).
