Hi Avro Users & Developers,

We are currently evaluating a framework for serialization & IPC and one of the
choices is Avro. The serialization design choices of Avro are great (schema
being part of the message, the easy of use, ability to evolve consumer and
producers easily etc.). The big question is the RPC part. The Avro wikipedia
page states it’s experimental. And I noticed that it’s still using Netty v3. So
I guess I’d like to know:

1) Are there any known current major users of Avro RPC?

2) Is it actively developer and are there plans to move to Netty v4? If so,
when, what is the roadmap?

3) Are there any major known limitations/bugs a new user should be aware of?

4) Performance-wise, is Avro RPC comparable to Thrift, are there any benchmarks
anywhere?

If anyway could one or a few of these questions, it’ll be greatly appreciated.
I made a small experiment using Avro IDL where a server performs and operations
and returns a result. The toolchain works beautifully and the IDL is very user
friendly. But the above questions are important to us both from a strategic and
architectural perspective.

Thanks much in advance!

Best Regards,
Boris
