I think it happens for any non-plain text.. be it RTF, HTML, or whatever. at least that's been my limited experience with mailing lists. and for what it's worth (I just had to correct myself, so don't take this as huge criticism), many people are also opposed to topposting .. or adding a reply to the top of an email. FWIW. -- Even the Magic 8 ball has an opinion on email clients: Outlook not so good.
