I searched everywhere for this answer. The reason for asking is, I am trying to create XML that resembles the following:
 
<body>
The details of the whatever are <b>this<b> and <i>that</i>.
More details are <b><i>here</i></b>.
</body>
 
After reading the XML spec, I found that the 'mode="mixed"' should support the mixing of text() elements and <i>/<b>(and new ones later) nodes.
 
Without the support of mode="mixed", I am guessing that XML would resemble:
 
<body>
<text>The details of the whatever are </text><b><text>this</text><b><text> and </text><i><text>that</text></i><text>.
More details are </text><b><i><text>here</text></i></b><text>.</text>
</body>
