BTW - I also found that I needed to add the line "maven.castor.properties.dir=." to the 
"project.properties" file to avoid an error java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: 
sun/reflect/ConstructorAccessorImpl with jdk 1.4.

According to my investigations, the above error is from Ant as I found
this info on it:

yeah, you need to set fork=true; java in non-forked mode is over restrictive
on classpaths (1.6 does know exactly what packages are and arent in the base
runtime for java1.1-1.4)
