Matthew,
by default, all instance variables will be prefixed with an underscore.
Whilst it is possible to change the name of an instance variable for an
individual element easily (using a binding file), applying this to a
complete document does not make sense, as there's too much overhead
involved.
Let me actually have a look at the source code to see whether there's
any other alternative.
