James, Whilst the approach in general is a valid one (and I have seen this happening in various places), I guess we (committers) are not really keen of 'maintaining' yet another package as part of our code base.
And size (whilst not important per se), it we frequently have (?) to update Xerces (as part of the Castor), ... well.
