Thanks for your email. I always thought that mapping file is required for 
classes which are not castor generated and yet required to use benefits castor 
comes bundled with.

Does it mean, that no matter how you generate your classes, in order the do the 
UNMARSHALLING correct, I must a write mapping file? 
Werner --> No, incorrect. When you start from an XML schema and generate Java 
classes, the descriptor classes generated in addition replace the mapping file 
(actually, carry the same information as a mapping file).

This requires an update anytime any structure hierarchy changes.
 
Is there an utility that can create a mapping file for me based on 
Castorbuilder.properties?
Werner --> Sorry, but that question is not really clear to me .. :-(. You can 
always use the source generator to create a mapping file from the XML schema 
rather than the descriptor classes.
 
Let me knowUnmarshaller if this is a good idea - Rather than writing/generating 
a mapping file, wrap castor unmarshaller into MyUnmarshaller, which reads the 
nsmappings from castorbuilder.properties and call addNamespaceToPackage that 
many times on unmarshaller.

Have a look at
http://www.castor.org/xml-mapping.html#3.-The-Mapping-File in general,
and the section that describes the mapping in particular. E.g.
the element has an optional extends attribute that allows you to
specify parent child relationships, etc,
