Ive actually created all the classes and am in the process of creating the
mapping file by trial and error. I didnt have the time to work out how to
use the descriptor files in my senario.

You've got a couploe of choices there:
a) Try to get hold of the XML schema, and use the XML code generator to
generate Java classes and descriptor classes in one go. As the
descriptor classes replace a mapping file, you are set.
b) Use XMLInstance2Schema to create a draft XML schema from your XML
instance document, refine it and (re)start at a).
Can I assume that you do not have any Java classes yet ?

Any suggestions would be great
