Not to take anything away from the excellent Apache Commons projects, but I recently used XStream on a project with great success. It's very easy to use for a variety of use-cases.

Maybe Apache Commons Betwixt is what you need ... AFAIK it works quite
well especially if you use a 1:1 mapping (in any other case one has to
specify the mapping in .betwixt files).
