Apologies for the slow reply. Common approach on this list is to tag the subject, ie:
[lang] problem with StringEscapeUtils that can help it to be noticed. escapeHtml has a much disagreed with 'feature' that it escapes non-ASCII characters. That could be what you're seeing; perhaps mixed with unexpected encoding setup on your side that obscure it. ie) using SHIFT_JIS instead of UTF-8 and then seeing the escaped ASCII making it weirder.
