Hmm... are you sure? AFAIK, STARTTLS promotes a plain connection to an encrypted one, irrespectively of any authentication mechanisms: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STARTTLS Once a connection is upgraded, it stays encrypted. Perhaps you are referring to SASL, which deals with authentication?
