[pool] GenericKeyedObjectPool borrowObject returning null when exhausted

I am running into an issue where GenericKeyedObjectPool seems to be returning null when it's exhausted. I have it set to block. Is this expected? 

apache commons pool 1.5.4
java version "1.6.0_18"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.8) (6b18-1.8-0ubuntu1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode)
